Divine

This post is long overdue, I know. The song has been around for, oh say, 9 months now and it was in an album that—at first—I didn't even bother to get. Why would I anyway? Sure, I love Girls' Generation and it's my favorite band of all time, but when The Best was announced in May or June last year, I didn't even care about it—seeing it only as a "compilation of songs with no new songs" and that was just it.

On April 9, SNSD's new music video was released, Catch Me If You Can.

First off, I just want to say that I knew about the whole Jessica leaving SNSD thing, but for some unknown reason, I just dismissed it and the next day, I didn't even notice that Jessica left SNSD. Shortly after watching Catch Me If You Can, I noticed two things: I missed Jessica's voice (she usually sing all or most of the high notes) and that my eyes were constantly on the look for Jessica—I even counted how many members were on each scene because I wanted to see the nine girls again. But alas, they were only eight girls on that music video. No Jessica, no news of her coming back to SNSD.

Shortly after that, it hit me like a truck. It's as if a part of me—or a part of SNSD—was missing. Only one member has left and yet the group doesn't feel complete. Usually in groups on bands, they can easily replace a member if one decides to quit, and fans wouldn't notice it much. It felt different for SNSD.

These girls, these nine talented young girls were together since the beginning. Back then, I heard news that they all slept in one room or dorm, a lot of them were roommates, they always ate dinner together, and so on. After seeing Paradise in Phuket, man, I thought that the Soshi bond was unbreakable. (I seriously wanted to show you all that scene but unfortunately, I don't have that ISO file anymore. I had it in my old hard drive, which got corrupted, and I can't find the download link anymore, sorry. I'd love to make an article about it once I find it, hopefully I will before college starts.)

Anyway, that's basically it. Almost everyone thought that SNSD had a tight bond, and that no one was going to leave SNSD.

Well, on September, a lot of Sones were shocked to find that Jessica Jung, SNSD's lead vocalist, has left SNSD. At first, it was a complete surprise, not a lot of people expected that Jessica would leave SNSD, and there were almost no "warning signs" of her getting sick of the group or wanting to ever leave the group—it was a complete shock to the fans.

Long story short, at first I didn't care about Jessica leaving and now, after seeing SNSD's new music video, I only just felt the pain of Jessica leaving the group. After watching Catch Me If You Can, I wanted to check Jessica's Wikipedia page and I read a part where it said,

Jessica's last released song with Girls' Generation is "Divine", released as a part of the repackaged version of their first Japanese greatest hits album, The Best.

Immediately, I rushed to my laptop and went on YouTube to see what the song was about. I have to say, that for the last song Jessica released with SNSD, it felt like it was a clear warning sign that someone was about to leave the group. The song was so depressing, yet it's literally THE BEST song I've ever heard from SNSD.

I couldn't find any HD 1080p version of the music video on YouTube, and it was hard to find it. I'll just link the most viewed version instead. Keep in mind that the video is repeated twice and that it ends with Jessica saying, "We can be divine." The English translation below is (what I believe to be) the most accurate translation of the song, courtesy of Sones at Soshified—they're really awesome for translating the song.

Without any further ado, I present to you "Divine" by Girls' Generation.

I suppose I'm too fragile
My heart wavers so easily
Looking for an answer that fades as the dawn breaks

The crossroad standing in my way
The starlight guiding me
Tell me where I'm supposed to go

No matter how far, no matter how hard I falter
I’m waiting for a sign from above, that’s destiny

Like I'm small and powerless against the raging tide
But as long as the sea parts, I'll make a path there
Someday
We can be divine

Even continuing to walk barefoot on the cold ground
Your warmth will support me
(You're always by my side)

Why, when we were born apart,
were we always meant to be together?
You know me better than anyone

Stepping up to meet my [overwhelming] fate
With you, I can be strong

I thought nothing would ever scare me
But now, I'm afraid of losing you
Until [the day] the light shines through the clouds
Don't say goodbye

At that time when our respective paths open,
Surely, you would remember our wish, right?
Let's make the journey we walked together be everlasting proof
We're always one
(We are always one)

In front of the raging tide
What can we do?
Let's meet the challenge in a close embrace
I believe
We can be divine
Our thoughts are one

We can be divine

The song sounds depressing (and to me, it sounds like a death march), but it's THE BEST song SNSD has ever released and, to this day, it's my favorite song.

Jessica may have left SNSD, and she may never come back, but she left behind some of the best memories this lad will ever have. I have a lot of things to be thankful for because of her, and I hope that I can thank her properly one day.

I don't usually end posts with a corny message (well, not anymore, I suppose) but here's one final thought:
Jessica may have left Girls' Generation, but she will always be a part of Girls' Generation, now and forever.
